This assignment challenged us to choose 10-15 of our favorite personal artworks created over the years. This was a very challenging assignment. Most of the works I chose were for personal reasons, like I had a good memory of what I was doing or what was going on in my life when I created that specific art work. Some of these were for assignments in the UF program, and some were just for fun. More than anything, this assignment made me think about how much I love creating art, and seeing how my style has developed over the years. *Note - where you see several photos in a row horizontally, click on a photo to enlarge. #1- "Family Migration Study" - 2016 - This 18"x36" painting was created with acrylic paint, cloth, and photographic images, as an assignment for a class I took in the spring semester at UF, on globalization. I had to really think about the places my family migrated to America from, and the stories that made up their lives.
#2- "Kawaii" - 2016- This painting, 18"x36", acrylic, watercolor, paper, ephemera, and markers on canvas, was also created for an assignment in the globalization class. The paper I wrote with it was about kawaii art, and its influence on American art. My students introduced me to this style of art last school year, and I have become almost as obsessed with it and manga as they are now.
#3- Bollywood Elephant - 2016 - 12"x18" acrylic on canvas. This painting was created at my friend's art studio in town, during a class a took, doing research for a paper for my globalization class, and relaxing and painting on a Saturday afternoon when I had not been out of the house for a while after the birth of my son in January.
#4 - "Explosion at Monet's Pond" - 2016 - acrylic on 18"x36" canvas. I painted this in the spring, just for fun. I had watched a few videos online of the intuitive painter, Flora Bowley, and was trying to create using her techniques. I did not quite succeed, but I still had fun, and made something way different than what I usually do.
#5 - "Paper towel holder"- 2016 - stickers, bling, and decals on metal. I created this yesterday, August 5, 2016, as I was working on different things in my art classroom, getting ready for the new school year. I was considering putting tiles with student paintings on this wall above the sink, but there are several things, like this paper towel holder, that I couldn't remove, so I decided to "upgrade" it instead.
#6 - "The Funky Bluebird Club" - 2011- Acrylic and ephemera on wooden birdhouse, approximately 3"x4". My daughter, who was 3 years old at the time, and I painted many birdhouses that summer. This was one of my favorites. We put eyeballs, feathers, bottlecaps, googly eyes, whatever we had on hand, for our decorations. We had so much fun making these.
#7 - "Miniature Mardi Gras masks" - 2011 - Acrylic paint on 1/2"x1 1/2" porcelain masks. I painted these masks the same summer as the birdhouses, with my daughter. Her masks turned out very colorful also, and I am currently working on making a display for them all in my classroom. Again, it was good memories associated with this project.
#8 - "Mural and deco outside my art room" - 2016 - Acrylic paint, spray paint, yarn, and metal deco. I started working on this at the beginning of this summer, and continued working on it when I could. The hallway outside my back door was very dark and gray, and I just wanted to brighten it up for the kids and get them excited about going to Art class.
#9 - "Chairs for Mrs. Albano's granddaughters" - 2016 - Acrylic on wooden chairs. I painted these during the spring of this year, as requested for one of our 1st grade teachers. She wanted her granddaughters to have chairs with their names on them. She wanted the red one in a Scandinavian pattern, and the white one softer and pinker, and these are what I came up with. I had a lot of fun painting them.
#10 - "Mailboxes for the office staff" - 2016 - The first box, "Mrs. Amy", I asked our attendance secretary if I could paint for her, back in the spring, because she had some really old stickers of a sunshine and a smiley face, and I just wanted to make it look nice for her. After I gave it back to her, the bookkeeper saw it and asked me to paint her box, too, so I painted hers with the beach theme since she loves the beach. When I went to take hers back to her earlier this week, our vice principal saw it and asked me to paint Darth Vader on his. I just finished his yesterday. I would love to do the whole office staff's' boxes if they'd like. It was a fun project.
